The Last Great Thing You Did,
Various Artists (Lookout Records), 1997.
I'm not going to give this a ranking because it's not an album, it's a sampler of Lookout Records' releases from 1997. Therefore, it's a good resource if you're interested in hearing the bands on Lookout Records. Green Day was originally on Lookout Records and I think that they are a fairly good example of the sound you can expect to find here -- not particularly original, catchy, California flavored punk rock.
This album has tracks from The High Fives, Mr. T Experience, Pansy Division, Pinhead Gunpowder, Avail, Squirtgun, Potatomen, (young) Pioneers, and The Queers among others. I don't particularly like most of these bands, but there a lot of people who do. So if you haven't heard this stuff I would recommend that you at least listen to it. The bands I like on here are The Potatomen who play music that is very derivative of the Smiths and the (young) Pioneers who play trashy, blues inspired rock and roll. Give it a spin, or go to their really nice web site http://www.lookoutrecords.com.
You can write to Lookout Records: PO Box 11374, Berkeley, CA 94712-2374.
